Ashley and I have both started reading A Perilous Undertaking (Veronica Speedwell #2) by Deanna Raybourn and I at least had forgotten how much I enjoyed Veronica, Stoker, and their camaraderie. They’re both so comfortable, both with each other and for me as a reader. No one will be surprised to learn that I forgot a part of the ending to #1 and had to go back and rediscover it. You may be surprised to learn that (a year and a half later) Ashley also forgot that part! I got to both make her roll her eyes at me, and inform her of what she (*gasp*) had also forgotten. If you’re up for a comfortable night of books and conversation, sign up here to join us on Friday, December 10th at 7:30 p.m. CST. We’d love for you to join us, even if you just pop in to say hi!
Oh readers, when we were making plans for December, we were very much looking to be mood readers. Not based on the mood we expected to be in, but the mood we wanted to inspire ourselves to be in. December can be a hard time for a variety of reasons. There’s a lot going on, there is so much to do, both in the form of fun things and things that can feel like chores – for instance Ashley really doesn’t like doing the decorating but enjoys the holiday decorations; twinkle lights all year long! Plus, there is also just a lot going on in the world too. In order to combat some of the emotional heaviness of the season, we wanted books that felt easy, that were going to be familiar, and that just felt comfortable. While we do want to continue inviting in challenges and new ideas, December felt like we needed a break because of the busy overwhelm of the season, so we’ll pick that up next month. And of course we also have our ever growing TBR lists, especially my holds which contributes to the number of books in a series you’ll see on our list. We enjoy a series because the expectations have already been set in previous titles, and if we’re continuing on, because we don’t always, those expectations have been met. I am really excited about the books we have for you this month. I’ve been looking forward to reading them, (and not only because there’s a favorite from 2020 and a follow up to a 2019 favorite coming) and also writing about them to bring them to you (except for the first, which is already out because we could not wait to bring comfort to you this season). So put on your soft pants, grab your beverage of choice, and head to a cozy spot with a blanket – and some twinkle lights! It’s going to be a comfortable month around here, and I for one couldn’t be more excited about it!
Portrait of A Scotsman (A League of Extraordinary Women #3) by Evie Dunmore*
The Bronzed Beasts (The Gilded Wolves #3) by Roshani Choski
Isn’t It Bromantic (Bromance Book Club #4) by Lyssa Kay Adams*
The Lazy Genius Way: Embrace What Matters, Ditch What Doesn’t, and Get Stuff Done by Kendra Adachi
*While we normally don’t support reading series out of order, if one really wanted to go ahead and read this, one could because this is a romance series, so you know that HEA is coming, which is one of the contributors to the comfortable nature of the genre, at least for us. We’ve read and loved the rest of the series, so if you jump ahead to read with us and enjoy, please pick up the rest of the series soon. Just note that there will be characters and situations that have already occurred that readers familiar with the series will know about and could potentially be a spoiler for previous titles if you jump ahead with us.
Happy Comfort Reading!
~Nikki & Ashley
