Darling readers, we are back in March with another round of celebrations! In January, we celebrated the lasting genius that is Jane Austen (even if Emma isn’t our favorite iteration of it), in February, we celebrated Black History Month, and in March, we’re celebrating women! We jumped in with a bang, and we do so hope it will continue. While some may question how any of this fits with our diversity goals, particularly when we are reading no male authors this month, we don’t. When we look at the way publishing houses have historically favored the texts written by white men (and some still do, ugh), and the way curriculums have been (and are still) focused around authors of that same demographic, we know that much of our reading life has been focused on one demographic of authors, even if their tales are varied. To that end, we do celebrate the months focused on other genders and other cultures by reading books by authors who have those lived experiences, so that we get a window into their worlds, while also working towards general diversity in the books we read outside of the blog (unless our lives necessitate binging romance novels, and then we lose some of that diversity in favor of blankie reads, we know, #SorryNotSorry).
This March, we’ll be reading four selections by women, two rooted in history, two rooted in mythology; one non-fiction; one by a woman of color; and two, yes that’s right TWO Advanced Reader Copies! It’s already been a bit of a wild ride with Brunhild and Fredegund, and I think it’s safe to say it will likely continue throughout the rest of the month.
The Dark Queens by Shelley Puhak (review available now here)
The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh
Daughter of the Shadows (Defying the Crown #2) by Kerry Chaput
Silver in the Bone by Alexandra Bracken
