We don’t know about you, dear readers, but where we are, the temperatures are rising and we are preparing for summer reading! Yes, the calendar is set and the programming has been announced at my local library, but we’re also talking about how to make lemonade out of Nikki’s holds list and it’s shaping up to be pretty fantastic, particularly where you all come in, Virtual Book Club! If you’re up for a little vacation back in time, join us in reading and discussing Julia Quinn’s The Duke and I on Friday, June 10 at 7:30 p.m. CST. Sign up here to let us know you’re coming, so you get the formal invitation!
It’s here…finally. The day that always makes me think of Anne Shirley and cringe about boy bands, May. While we could be leaning into books about flowers to follow up on April Showers, let’s be real, last month’s theme was little more than an excuse to read what we wanted to read, and, well, while this month we do have a bit more focus, we’re curating our selections much the same way as usual. In general, that means planning a bit of variety in genres and keeping the goal of assorted voices speaking into our lives in mind. However, darling readers, if there’s a book you’re eager for our commentary on, summer is coming, and that’s always a great time, so drop a comment below and slide into our DMs.
Our titles this month come from a variety of sources, but they’re all written by Asian American Authors, as May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in the US. As we continue to seek different voices and lived experiences to speak into our lives, it’s an easy choice to select books as a part of that education. Readers, please remember, while our friends who have different lived experiences than ours didn’t sign up to educate us, authors 100% signed up to share their stories, both fiction and non-fiction, and love to speak into the lives of others through their books. We are really excited about the mix we have for you this month (and also how these titles will continue to support our recovery from too many YA novels). Some may appear to be less serious, but the layers matter in stories, and layers abound in these titles!
Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan
Minor Feelings: An Asian American Reckoning by Cathy Park Hong
Mysteries of Honolulu by Robert Lopaka Kapanui
The Kiss Quotient Trilogy by Helen Hoang
What ways are you planning to recognize Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month this May?
