Here at Heart.Wants.Books we hope you are living your best summer reading life, because we are sure trying to do the same. One way we’re trying is through setting up bi-monthly Virtual Book Clubs, with the next discussion on Friday, August 26 at 7:30pm CST. In August, we’ll be chatting about From Blood to Ash #1 by Jennifer Armentrout, which we hope is an engaging, escapist read. While this may not meet your beach read needs, it should make for a fun hang with your favorite virtual readers! If this sounds like a great time, or you just want to pop in to say hi, go ahead and sign up here!

Happy summer reading folks! My people and I have been living our best reading lives, except when summer camp and work get in the way, AND my favorite librarian (and I don’t actually know which) decided to turn the leaderboard from landscape to portrait and include, not the top 5 readers, but the top 10, AND WE’RE ALL ON THE BOARD! It’s so fun to see my people so excited to track their reading minutes every day and see where they are in the competition! The books listed above definitely helped me (except one, check back next week for more on that), and I for sure had one of those moments last week where I looked at the number of titles I had in progress, cringed, and got to finishing some books. Was it fun to have an audio, a dead tree, an e-nonfiction, and an e-fiction going all at the same time? Actually yes, it was. Am I glad I’m down to one nonfiction (both in e-book and dead tree form, which is SO fun) plus year-long read? SO GLAD! And yet, I’ll probably start a few fiction very soon.
I had a delight of an audiobook experience this month, with my first listen of A Court of Frost and Starlight. I listened to the first three books in this series several years ago and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, so ACOFAS got put on the good ole holds list too, and it was SUCH A JOY. For anyone who’s considering skipping this book because it’s just filler, you’re dumb to want to skip a word of this amazing series or Sarah J. Maas’s writing. While there isn’t a lot of action in this title, some important transition things happen between the original trilogy and A Court of Silver Flames and I’m glad I took the 6ish hours (less because I increased the speed a bit) because it was truly a joy to listen to (and help me get closer to catching up with my people in the competition). While I personally wouldn’t want an initial read of this series on audio, I do enjoy the reread, and I’m both terrified and excited to listen to ACOSF at some point, even at 26 hours.
The other thing I wanted to discuss this month isn’t really the book, but it is about Halfway to Harmony by Barbara O’Connor. Dear grownup readers, when a young person in your life gets excited to talk to you about books, get curious and ask questions. When they share one of their favorite titles with you, consider reading it. That’s how Halfway to Harmony got on my Read list. I was chatting books with a young person (who doesn’t live with me), and I asked about books he enjoyed. He mentioned this title is one of his favorites, the library had it, and BAM it was mine to read. I haven’t gotten to chat with him about it yet, but I’m excited to do so. It hit me unexpectedly in the feels because of some overlap I have with the main character. There’s no way this young person is aware of said overlap, so it’ll be a fun conversation very soon!
How are you using books to connect with others in your life?

I’m going to go ahead and answer Nikki’s question directly… because I admitted to 500 women real estate investors last week that I read a BUNCH ton of books every year and write a blog over here. And from then on I was known as the book woman. I did admit multiple times that I do have that #kidfreeflex, but also mentioned that my book buddy who has two littles in her house reads just as much or more than I do. That being said, being in Charlotte, North Carolina for almost a whole week of filling my cup at The Real Estate InvestHer Conference was just what the doctor ordered, but not for my bookish life. I only finished one book last week and it took me longer than I expected or wanted. But, I got to be around women doing the same things as I am but bigger and with more zeros and it helps to know that what we want in every aspect of our lives is 100% attainable. If you are interested in learning more about how real estate investing can help you live the life you’ve imagined, you know where to reach me. 😉
From InvestHERCon, I have about 10 more books added to my TBR, all of them nonfiction. I don’t know when I will get around to them, because our summer schedule is a little booked (ha!) but I think I’ll be adding more audiobooks into my life in order to get them in sooner rather than later. But this lemonade summer is meant for fictional, escapist reads, and I haven’t gotten as many in as I wanted. Here’s to hoping that July gives me the opportunity to read one or two of those dead tree titles that I’ve been pushing off.
I can’t believe we’re at the halfway point of 2022 today, that I’m 61 books into my reading goal (I expected more to be honest), and that I have to rethink my goals for the rest of the year both personal and professional. I love that we get a long holiday weekend for Independence Day that allows me to sit down with my thoughts and do the work of resetting my goals. It takes time, pen and paper, and sometimes math. So, while you’re taking the time to celebrate being ungrateful colonials this weekend with your family and friends, think about what you want to do to make your family, your country, your world, – this thing called your LIFE better for YOU. And I hope that it involves reading some good books.
